The Background of Serat Wedhatama

Serat Wedhatama was written by Mangkunegara IV (1811-1881), who was the fourth ruler of the Mangkunegaran principality in Surakarta, Central Java. He was born as Raden Mas Sudira and ascended to the throne in 1857 at the age of 47. He was known as a wise and benevolent leader, as well as a prolific writer and poet. He wrote several other works of Javanese literature, such as Serat Warayagnya, Serat Wirawiyata, Serat Darmawasita, Serat Salokatama, and Serat Paliatma.

Mangkunegara IV was raised in a Javanese culture that was influenced by Islam, especially the mystical branch known as Kejawen or Javanese Islam. He was well-versed in both Javanese and Arabic languages and scriptures, and he sought to harmonize the teachings of both traditions in his writings. He also incorporated elements of Hinduism, Buddhism, and local beliefs in his worldview. He believed that the ultimate goal of human life was to achieve manunggaling kawula gusti, or the union of the self with God.

Serat Wedhatama was one of his most famous and important works, as it expressed his vision of Javanese philosophy and ethics in a poetic form. He wrote it in five chapters, each consisting of 100 verses in different forms of macapat, or Javanese poetic meters. The five chapters are pangkur, sinom, pocung, gambuh, and kinanthi. Each chapter covers a different aspect of human life and behavior, such as morality, wisdom, love, justice, and spirituality.
