This is the simplest form of plastic film thickness monitor which can be created using the embedded application. All you need to do is place a standard printed circuit board on top of the PR2000 and connect it to a home computer using a standard serial interface. You can also see the monitor in action below. This application has been designed to allow using all the features of the PR2000 in your own solution. If you need the non-contact method, the PR2000 can also be calibrated using the highly accurate gauge by weight method discussed here. After this is done once, you can get the average film thickness as well as the filmvariabilityusing the PR2000. You can also read our article Why use a plastic film profiler
An alternative method of getting a film thickness profile is to use the non-contact method. The PR2000 features an infrared sensor which emits a light stripe, which is then reflected back from the film. If the thickness is small, the light stripe is invisible to the sensor, and so the thickness cannot be determined. However, in large thickness ranges, like you would typically find in a film, the light stripe can easily be detected and the thickness determined. The non-contact method is discussed in more detail on the PR2000 manufacturers website.
For most applications, it will be enough to find the average thickness and any filmvariation in the thickness. In the film thickness range used by the digital camera industry (0.3-0.6mm), the PR2000 finds film with a thickness of 0.5-0.8mm perfectly.
