In the wake of their success against the Yakuza, Tony managed to gain Wongs trust by allowing him to be a member of the Avengers. Wong was shown to be fluent in a variety of fields, ranging from hand-to-hand combat to economics.
The next day he was taken to the Chinese island of Wanchai, where Wong-Chu had his palace constructed. Wu-Han then began showing Stark great respect, but the American believed that the prisoner was after his gold, and used every opportunity to touch the weapon Wong had asked him to build. [note 2] Throughout his captivity, Tony secretly attempted to construct the weapon. When Wong-Chu suggested that Stark work immediately without sleep, as the prisoner had to be kept strong, Stark began to tell him that he was tired, but stopped when the shrapnel began to move again. [note 3] Wong-Chu eventually conceded that Tony was free to sleep, and left the room as the prisoner lay down in the next room to work.
Almost a week had passed since Wong-Chu had left, and after the prisoner had worked without sleep for an entire day and a night, he realized that the shrapnel had grown no longer. [note 4] He sent for Wong-Chu, who had returned, and demanded that the prisoner continue working. Stark was able to continue, but Wong-Chu, angered by the prisoner's feigned sleepiness, ordered him to build the weapon again. The prisoner then began to tell Wong-Chu that the shrapnel had now grown large enough to not only penetrate his heart, but also his brain. Realizing this, the prisoner lied and told Wong-Chu that he had succeeded.
